AC Transit "Realign" Brings Major Bus Network Changes to the East Bay
August 2025
One of the most significant updates to the East Bay bus network in decades, now in effect.
AC Transit has rolled out its "Realign" service changes, marking one of the most significant updates to the East Bay bus network in decades. The changes, which went into effect in August 2025, impact the majority of bus lines across the system and are designed to better reflect how people travel today.
Developed over a two-year planning process with community input, Realign responds to shifting travel patterns driven by hybrid work, changing ridership demand, and ongoing budget constraints. The update adjusts approximately 84% of bus routes, with a focus on improving reliability, simplifying routes, and maintaining service where it is most needed.
For riders, the changes include a mix of route modifications, schedule adjustments, and in some cases, the consolidation or replacement of existing lines. Several routes now run more frequently or for longer hours—particularly in high-demand corridors—while others have reduced frequency to allow resources to be redistributed across the network.
The Realign plan also introduces new connections and more direct service in certain areas, helping improve access to key destinations such as BART stations, job centers, and community hubs. At the same time, some riders may experience the need to transfer where direct routes previously existed, reflecting a broader shift toward a more streamlined and interconnected system.
While the changes are not new, they continue to shape how East Bay residents move throughout the region. Riders are encouraged to review updated routes and schedules to understand how their trips may be affected and to take advantage of improved frequency and reliability where available.
As transit agencies continue adapting to post-pandemic travel patterns, initiatives like Realign highlight the ongoing effort to balance service quality, equity, and long-term sustainability across the network.
